Shield
Orange and white are colors traditionally associated with Signal Corps. The wavy diagonal band, representing the Rhine River, refers to the Battalion's participation in campaigns in the Central European area. Blue and the patterned bands flanking the central band are taken from the Arms of Ardennes. The "potent" pattern also represents telegraph poles and refers to the unit's signal function.
Crest
During the Vietnam War the organization provided signal support, represented by the flash, to the I Field Force, Vietnam. The sword is from the shoulder sleeve insignia of the supported organization; it is also indicative of combat support and the award of the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry to the organization. The bamboo also refers to South Vietnam and is divided into three segments to represent the three Meritorious Unit Awards to the organization while the leaves represent the thirteen campaigns in that country.
The coat of arms was originally approved on 21 Dec 1962. It was amended to add a crest to the coat of arms on 10 Jun 1980. On 4 Mar 1992 the coat of arms was cancelled. The coat of arms was reinstated for the 54th Signal Battalion, with symbolism of the shield revised on 22 Oct 1992.
